On June 13, 2014, 2,000 tons of steel, equipment and engineering vehicles were successively hoisted onto the "Sunshine Fortune" ship. After the operation is completed, the ship will pass through the Pacific Ocean directly to the Port of Corinto, Nicaragua, marking the first direct sea voyage between China and Nicaragua.
On the morning of the same day, the "China Tianjin Port-Nicaragua Corinto Port Chinese Enterprise Engineering Materials First Voyage Ceremony" was held at Pier 13 of the Dagu Port Area of Tianjin Port.
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. In December 2021, China and Nicaragua resumed diplomatic relations. At the Entrepreneurs Conference of the Third "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum held in 2023, China International Engineering Co., Ltd. and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Nicaragua reached a cooperation agreement on the renovation and expansion project of Nicaragua's Punta Verte International Airport.
"Today is a historic day for Nicaragua. This is the first time that direct sea transport has been realized from China to Nicaragua." Michael Campbell, Nicaragua's ambassador to China, said in his speech that the ship was carrying the first batch of equipment and machinery needed for the construction of Punta Verte International Airport. After the completion of the airport, Nicaragua's air connectivity will be greatly improved, and the direct flight range of Nicaragua to Asia, Europe and African countries will be further expanded.
In August 2023, China and Nicaragua signed a free trade agreement, which will take effect in January 2024. "Since the signing and entry into force of the free trade agreement, we have seen impressive growth in trade between the two countries. China is already Nicaragua's second largest trading partner." Michael Campbell said in an interview
