Introduction to Common API 5CT Steel Grades

Date:2026-09-29
H40 / J55 / K55 (Entry-level)
These three grades belong to API 5CT Group 1; they share the same chemical composition requirements but differ primarily in mechanical properties. H40 has the lowest strength and is used for the shallowest, lowest-pressure wells. J55 and K55 share the same yield strength range (55,000–80,000 psi), but K55 requires a higher minimum tensile strength (95,000 psi vs. 75,000 psi for J55), making it more reliable when a higher safety margin is required.

N80 (Mid-strength Workhorse)
With a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi, N80 is one of the most widely used steel grades, offering a good balance between strength and cost. It has two subtypes: N80-1 (typically normalized) and N80-Q (quenched and tempered); the latter offers superior toughness and performance uniformity.

L80 (Sour Service Grade)
L80 shares the same yield strength as N80 (80,000 psi), but its primary value lies in its resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC). API 5CT imposes strict hardness limits (≤23 HRC) and tighter yield strength tolerances for L80, distinguishing it from N80. L80 should be selected over N80 for "sour service" wells containing H₂S.

P110 (High-strength Grade)
P110 has a minimum yield strength of 110,000 psi, approximately 37% higher than that of N80. Produced via quenching and tempering, it is used for deep wells, high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) wells, and long well sections where the casing string bears significant self-weight. It should be noted that standard P110 is not automatically suitable for H₂S-containing environments; if sulfides are present, special grades or additional specifications are required.

Q125 (Highest Common Strength Grade)
With a minimum yield strength of 125,000 psi, Q125 represents the highest strength level among the commonly used steel grades in the API 5CT standard; it is utilized for ultra-deep wells or extreme load conditions. The latest edition of API 5CT has also introduced the C125 grade, further expanding options within the high-strength category.

Basic Selection Logic
Shallow wells, cost-priority → H40 / J55 / K55

Medium-depth wells, general applications → N80 (most common choice)

H₂S-containing (sour) environments → L80 (or sulfide-resistant grades such as C90, T95)

Deep wells, high pressure and high temperature → P110 / Q125
