Applications of High-Grade Line Pipe

Date:2026-07-10
1. Long-Distance, High-Pressure Onshore Transport
This is the most classic and widespread application for high-grade line pipe. By significantly increasing transport pressure, it enables higher flow rates and lower transportation costs.

Primary Steel Grades and Applications: X70 is currently the "workhorse" grade for large-scale pipeline projects worldwide, while X80 represents an "advanced choice" for those seeking higher efficiency. Major projects, such as my country's "West-to-East Gas Pipeline," have extensively utilized X70 and X80 grade line pipes.

Core Advantages: Weight and cost reduction. Upgrading the steel grade allows for a significant reduction in pipe wall thickness, thereby saving substantial amounts of steel and construction costs. For instance, upgrading a project from X70 to X80 can result in steel savings of approximately 12%.

2. Deep-Sea and Harsh Environment Service
High-grade line pipes must withstand extreme conditions, such as the ultra-high hydrostatic pressure and low temperatures found in deep-sea environments.

Typical Applications: Inter-platform pipelines connecting offshore gas fields and long-distance subsea export pipelines. For example, X70 grade steel has been widely used in subsea pipeline projects in the North Sea.

Key Performance Characteristics:

High Strength and Thick Walls: In deep-water zones, pipelines must withstand immense external hydrostatic pressure to prevent collapse.

Excellent Low-Temperature Toughness: Ensures the pipeline remains robust in cold deep-sea environments and does not suffer from brittle fracture.

3. Special Media and Emerging Applications
As the energy transition progresses, the scope of line pipe applications is expanding, placing higher demands on material corrosion resistance.

Sour Service: Used for transporting "wet" oil and gas containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), preventing pipeline failure due to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). Typical grades include X60QS and X70QS.

Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Transport: To adapt to future energy structures, steel manufacturers are developing high-grade line pipes specifically designed for transporting pure hydrogen, hydrogen-blended natural gas, and carbon dioxide (for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage—CCUS).
