1. Standard Overview
Full Standard Name: Standard Specification for Carbon Structural Steel

Latest Version: ASTM A36/A36M-19

Primary Applications: Covers carbon steel shapes, plates, and bars of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted, or welded construction of bridges and buildings, as well as for general structural purposes.

2. Chemical Composition
According to the ASTM A36/A36M standard, the chemical composition requirements (mass fraction) are as follows:

Carbon (C): ≤ 0.26% (specific content varies by product type and thickness; e.g., C ≤ 0.25% for shapes)

Silicon (Si): 0.15% – 0.40% (stricter limits apply for greater thicknesses)

Manganese (Mn): 0.85% – 1.35%

Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.04%

Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.05%

Copper (Cu): ≤ 0.20%

3. Mechanical Properties
The mechanical property requirements for A36 steel plates are as follows:

Yield Strength: ≥ 250 MPa (36 ksi)

Tensile Strength: 400 – 550 MPa (58 – 80 ksi)

Elongation after Fracture: Plates and bars ≥ 23%; shapes ≥ 21% (elongation ≥ 20% for a 50mm gauge length)

4. Thickness and Dimensions
A36 steel plates are available in a wide range of thicknesses, from thin sheets to extra-thick plates:

Hot-rolled thin sheets: 1.5mm – 6mm

Medium-thick plates: 6mm – 50mm (most common)

Thick plates: 50mm – 200mm

Extra-thick plates (special rolling/custom): Up to 300mm or thicker.
