Steel pipe elongation: a key indicator for measuring toughness

In the entire process of steel pipe design, material selection, production and application, elongation is a crucial mechanical performance indicator. It directly reflects the degree of plastic deformation that the steel pipe can withstand before breaking, and is the core parameter for measuring the toughness and ductility of the material.

1. What is elongation?

Elongation refers to the percentage of the length of the gauge part increased by the original gauge length after the steel pipe specimen is broken in the tensile test. The calculation formula is:

Elongation (%) = [(Lu - Lo) / Lo] × 100%

Lu: The final gauge length measured after the broken part is carefully spliced after the specimen is broken.

Lo: The original gauge length of the specimen (usually according to the standard, such as 5 or 10 times the diameter/width).

2. Importance of elongation

Elongation is more than just a numerical value for steel pipes. It profoundly affects the performance and reliability of steel pipes:

Safety margin: High elongation means that steel pipes can still undergo significant plastic deformation without breaking immediately after reaching the yield point or even the tensile strength. This provides valuable "warning time" and safety margin for the structure, preventing catastrophic brittle fractures in unexpected overloads (such as earthquakes and impacts). For example, in the frame of a building, a steel pipe with high elongation can absorb energy through deformation and delay overall collapse.

Formability: During the bending, flaring, flanging, and stamping of steel pipes, the material needs to undergo plastic deformation. Good elongation ensures that the steel pipe can complete the processing of these complex shapes smoothly and without cracks. Steel pipes with low elongation are very prone to cracks or even breaks at bends.

Energy absorption capacity: When subjected to impact loads (such as vehicle anti-collision structures and oil pipelines affected by geological disasters), steel pipes absorb energy through plastic deformation. The higher the elongation, the stronger its ability to absorb energy is usually, which is more beneficial to protecting the safety of personnel and equipment.

Stress redistribution: Local stress concentration (such as near holes and welds) is difficult to avoid. Steel pipes with good elongation can redistribute and relieve stress to a certain extent through local plastic deformation, avoiding premature cracking of stress concentration points.

Comprehensive performance manifestation: Elongation is often considered in combination with yield strength and tensile strength. If the elongation of high-strength steel pipes is too low, they may appear brittle and have a high risk of use. An ideal steel pipe needs to achieve a good balance between strength and ductility.
