Introduction of Aluminum-magnesium Alloy

Aluminum-magnesium alloy (usually refers to 5xxx series aluminum alloy, such as 5083, 5052, 5754, 5182, etc.) is a very important non-heat-treated strengthened aluminum alloy with aluminum as the main matrix, magnesium (Mg) as the main alloying element (usually 0.5% - 6.2%), and often adding a small amount of manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), silicon (Si) and other elements.

Main features:

1.Lightweight: Low density (about 2.7 g/cm³), only about one-third of steel. This is one of its core advantages.

2.Excellent corrosion resistance:

Especially resistant to seawater corrosion: This is one of the most prominent features of aluminum-magnesium alloy. The addition of magnesium promotes the formation of a dense, stable and self-healing aluminum oxide passivation film on the aluminum surface, making it perform well in marine atmosphere, seawater and chloride ion environments.

Good atmospheric corrosion resistance.

3.Moderate to good strength:

Although the strength is usually lower than that of heat-treatable aluminum alloys (such as 2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx series), its strength can be significantly improved by work hardening (cold hardening) (such as H32, H34, H38, etc.).

Has good toughness and impact resistance.

4.Excellent machinability:

Excellent formability: In the annealed state (O state), it has very good plasticity and is suitable for complex forming processes such as deep drawing, bending, and spinning.

Good weldability: It is one of the best series of aluminum alloys for welding, especially suitable for fusion welding (such as MIG, TIG welding). The welded joint can maintain most of the strength and good corrosion resistance of the parent material (but the strength of the heat-affected zone of the weld will decrease).

5.Non-magnetic: Not affected by electromagnetic fields.

6.Good electrical and thermal conductivity: Although not as good as pure aluminum, it is still much better than steel.

7.Good polishing and anodizing properties: Beautiful appearance after surface treatment.

8.Good low temperature performance: Strength and toughness will not decrease significantly at low temperatures, and may even increase, making it suitable for low temperature applications.
