Something about the Bevel of the steel pipe

Date:2024-08-16
The bevel of steel pipe is an important part of welding engineering, which involves the preparation of welding workpieces and the guarantee of welding quality. The design and processing of the bevel directly affect the strength, sealing and corrosion resistance of the welded joint, and then affect the safety and service life of the entire welded structure. The following are some basic knowledge and processing methods about the bevel of steel pipe:

Definition and function of the bevel: The bevel refers to the groove of a certain geometric shape processed and assembled at the welded part of the weldment. The main purpose is to weld the workpiece and ensure the welding quality. The shape and size of the bevel should be selected according to the specific requirements of the welding workpiece. Common bevel forms include X-type bevel, V-type bevel, U-type bevel, etc.

Quality and performance of the bevel: The quality and performance of the bevel have a direct impact on the strength, sealing and corrosion resistance of the welded joint. If the bevel is defective or improperly prepared, it will lead to problems such as insufficient strength and poor sealing of the welded joint, thereby shortening the service life of the pipeline. Therefore, strict control of the quality and performance of the bevel is the key to ensure that the welded joint meets the design requirements. ‌
Processing methods of grooves: The processing methods of grooves include hand-held grinding wheel grinding, oxyacetylene cutting, lathe processing and manual filing. The specific processing method depends on the type, diameter and wall thickness of the pipe. For example, when the nominal diameter of low-pressure carbon steel pipe is equal to or less than 50mm, hand-held grinding wheel can be used for grinding the groove; when the diameter is greater than 50mm, oxyacetylene is used to cut the groove, and then the oxide layer is removed and polished flat with a hand-held grinder. ‌
Form of groove: The groove forms of pipes mainly include I-type groove, V-type groove and U-type groove. I-type groove is suitable for pipe welding with a wall thickness of less than 3.5mm; V-type groove is suitable for medium and low pressure steel pipe welding, and the groove angle is generally 60°~70°; U-type groove is suitable for high-pressure steel pipe welding, and the wall thickness is between 20~60mm.
